In 2006 moms’ face with her son took up half the page of the Calgary Herald. I couldn’t walk away. I had to know what I could do. She would be homeless this winter with her 3 children.
My story began 18 months before this, when I took a year leave of absence from my career to pursue following my heart to find what would make me happy and what would make me fulfilled. Becoming a trained life skills coach fine tuned what I was looking for. And early in 2006 I started to search for what I needed to do to solve poverty for children.
I felt that adults were responsible for their life’s decisions. But I continued to feel devastation when I saw or heard about how children, innocent bystanders, received the byproducts of adults behavior. Stories about not being fed; single mothers where fathers had walked away from their responsibilities; being abused; becoming slave labor; enslaved in the sex trade; the horror that happens is not expressed here. Children should have basic needs (food, shelter, clothing, safety, love, and education).
I started children without poverty as an initiative in 2006. When I saw mom’s face in the Calgary Herald I knew I had to act. This organization and our Sustain a Family Program is developed from our experience with this first family.
